| | neutral milk hotel - king of carrot flowers pts. 2-3 | ] | yes! my finals are set to begin rather shortly, and will be over in 11 hours or so, but this doesn't worry me, cause i have something to be excited about. my younger brother (genetic), chip off the old block, received his acceptance letter to the NYU music technology program last night. there is not a day that goes by that i don't slightly regret my decision to pass up going to the music business program there. at the time, berkeley computer science seemed like such a good idea... mistakes were made, but my brother comes out ahead for it, so i am glad. at least i got to spend a few more years in the bay area, which is, to quote the late ronald wilson reagan, a city on a hill. now, if i go for the music business master at nyu, i can even become roommates with my brother, leading to many great misadventures and comedies of errors. ha ha ha. |

| | windy & carl - consciousness | ] | in space, up and down cease to exist, becoming just as arbitrary as left and right. it has occured to me that in addition to to keeping us grounded, gravity also serves to give us this orientation. my problem stems from the observation that in television and film, space crafts are inevitably all oriented with the same understanding of up and down, even in the deepest, most remote parts of space, where no landmarks exist to use for calibration. this greatly disturbed me until i realized that just like we have standards of measurements, so can standards of orientation be developed to make space travel less discombobulative. nonetheless, i feel that it is unlikely that aliens from the gamma quadrant would coincidentally develop the same standards. perhaps i have been listening to too much drone music without the clarifying power of drugs. |

i have learned much this evening. first, never go scuba diving underwater if you are a naked woman, not only because of the dangers that sharks pose, but also of aquatic zombies. while they can serve to distract the sharks by trying to eat their flesh, they tend to take one by surprise by hiding amongst sea plants. second, after seeing portions of apocalypse now and the west wing, i realize why martin sheen deserves the electorate's trust and is able to serve as a good president: his military experience fighting in viet nam. also, there is apparently a movie entitled apocalypse pooh, which is winnie the pooh cartoons overlaid with dialogue from apocalypse now. it leaves something to be desired, but at the end, piglet as dennis hopper's character is spot on. in the same vein, there is also apparently blue peanuts, which is charles shulz's peanuts characters speaking dialogue from blue velvet my final, and perhaps most important lesson of the night came from wallace shawn, who said, "you fell victim to one of the classic blunders, the most famous of which is 'never get involved in a land ware in asia,' but only slightly less well known is this: 'never go in against a sicilian when death is on the line.'"
odb, dirt dogg, big baby jesus, unique ason, russel tyrone jones, osirus, joe bananas, etc... rip. i christened our bush outside with the last of my forty in honor of you. |

We are quartered in Centenary Hall, a dark brick structure we share with the popular culture department, known officially as American environments. A curious group. The teaching staff is. . . here to decipher the natural language of the culture, to make a formal method of the shiny pleasures they'd known in their Europe-shadowed childhoods--an Aristotelianism of bubble gum wrappers and detergent jingles." don delillo - white noise
don delillo's portrayal of the american studies department is frighteningly accurate, and would be just like the cal department if you replaced the new york males with a group of californians, genders evenly split, if not primarily female.
how am i supposed to listen to the one hundred odd albums i've accumulated in the last 25 days when i'm continually drawn back to music i already know i enjoy? am i supposed to ignore it? call the love affair to an end? sorry kid, you were great, but i've got to move on to things i don't even know if i'll like, let alone love like i've loved you. songs have feelings too. the most insulting part of this, to the songs, must be that much of the newly acquired music was sought because it was described as having similarities to my favorite past loves. any review that sites my bloody valentine, neutral milk hotel, bjork, curtis mayfield, or tom waits will undoubtedly garner my attention, but almost invariably disappoint. why do i put us through this? and then, unless it is irredeemably bad music, i lack the heart to delete or sell it. yet i did have the heart to abandon and neglect other music. part of this is due to the postmodern desire to continually acquire and collect, and part of it is a hope that i will in the future internalize the entire contents of my music collection and be forever with it in my mind. ah, man is a cold and fickle creation. life is a difficult and hard struggle. in the immortal words of freddie foxxx, who can always be counted on to bring voice to my inner turmoil, hard "like tryin' to find an ass on a chinese woman." |

while sniffing smokey robinson's ass might not give you a natural high, i have am beginning to believe that the miracles are the second best motown group after the four tops. however, it still bothers me that smokey was greatly responsible for the success of the second most over-rated motown group (after the supremes), the temptations, writing "my girl," "get ready," and "the way you do the things you do." on the other hand, marvin gaye got his start as a session drummer for the miracles, and smokey also wrote songs for gaye in the ealry years, so he is redeemed. also, "tracks of my tears" allegedly inspired the zombies' "time of the season." and as was pointed out to me earlier today, his version of "tracks of my tears" is far superior to aretha franklins. |

i know that most people will disagree with me greatly, but prince's greatest contribution to pop music was writing "when u were mine" for cyndi lauper. although, perhaps it was cyndi lauper's greatest contribution to prince. also, the live acoustic version of "time after time" with cyndi playing the dulcimer is also incredible.
also, i never thought that the prospect of getting married could excite me as much as this does.
you get married right on the enterprise bridge. the hovering borg behind them seems like an unfriendly omen, but the presence of isolinear chips and dip and holy rings of betazed (onion rings) at the reception should ease any uneasiness. with any luck, one wedding gift would be the voice interface module, which allows voice activated control of the lights. example: "computer, disengage lights" turns of the lights. amazing.
at this point, i've already proven my sad obsession, so i shall share this conversation between worf and riker that proves that worf is star trek's biggest pimp: riker: even klingons need love now and then. worf: for what we would consider love, sir, i would need a klingon woman. riker: what about plain old basic sex? you must have some need for that. worf: of course, but with the females available to me, sir - earth females - i must restrain myself too much. they are quite fragile sir. riker: worf, if anyone else had said that i'd suspect he was bragging. worf: bragging, sir? |
